LOT 1 – KINDERGARTEN
The main criteria for the functional and shape development came from:
–orientation towards the four cardinal directions; -main streets; -the traditional chinese housing, tulou;
Therefore, taking into consideration the fact that the orientation to South concurs with the secondary street, we opted for placing the exterior playground and classrooms towards this direction. The best placing of the classrooms, with the working hours 7 am – 6 pm, is the South or South-East. To dim the strong effect of the sunshine, we created on each level spacious terraces with the role of solar protection, creating the best ambient outside as much as inside. Also, they can be used as playgrounds, being directly connected to the classrooms. We opted for designing intimate exterior spaces, with direct access to the classroom, in order to facilitate particular games for each group. Taking into consideration the covered and protected (by the north, north-east winds) playgrounds, there is the possibility of using them in unfavorable weather conditions (rain, snow, strong winds or bright sun). Our philosophy is to create comfortable, versatile, protective and intimate, interior and exterior places, to help create benefic interactions for the physical and mental wellbeing of the children. We want the shape of the building to be something abstract for the children, something which they can interpret in multiple ways, such as a blackboard on which the drawings that interact with the architectural elements give the feeling of a building that is alive, as children see it, but not only them. This shape, which seems randomly carved, has the role through its multitude of interpretations, to give free play to one’s imagination, creating stories. The drawn characters evoke an optimistic attitude and an atmosphere of communion, beneficial to interaction in an urban environment.
