1. EMPHASIZING THE STATUES
The paving area reaches the statues base, which brings them closer to the pedestrian and enriches the comunication with him.
2. FUNCTIONAL ZONING
The space was divided in 3 main fuctional areas, that are shown coloured differently in the plans.
The very crowded public transport / traffic area was detached from the representative area (dominated by the four statues), by means of a row of benches.
Also, the massive greena areas separate the representative area from the space adjacent to the buildings (including the hemicicle and the Toma Caragiu Street), which is auspicious for developing bussinesses such as coffee- bars and restaurants.
By using these means, the necessary functional segregation is realized, while maintaining at the same time the square’s volumetric and visual integration (all the areas communicate both visually and at the traffic flow level).
3. THE RUINS OF ST. SAVA CHURCH
We propose the uncovering, restoring and keeping of the whole substructure of St. Sava – loweed at an underground level that can be accessed both from the parking lot and the future metro station. Until the metro station is built, a temporary underground enclosure may be built, which is accesible from the underground parking for visiting and maintenace.
We also propose the building of an overground observation point for viewing the ruins from above. This observation point will positioned alongside the separation area between the transport and the representation area.
Another idea is to underline the contour of the former church, by means of white cobblestone, placed at the sidewalk level.
4. CLEANING THE FACADES
We advocate the removal of all commercials, banners and other elements that are added to the historical buildings from the site, and the keeping of the original finishes. The only elements that will be allowed at the ground floor of the buildings are: linen covered pergolas and textile covered umbrellas (single, neutral colours and without printed elements / commercials)
5. THE TOMA CARAGIU SQUARE
At the intersection between Toma Caragiu and Ion Ghica streets we propose the placement of a new statue, which would become a public interest area, and an urban landmark.
